Club meeting – Monday 8th May 2017

I regret to report that we have not been able to secure a speaker for our May meeting.

Instead we will meet at Bilton Cricket Club as usual for 7:30 pm and go on a short ride-out either to Squires Cafe at Sherburn or to the Wetherby Whaler chip shop in Guiseley. A vote will be taken.

This means that you will have to come along on two wheels and take advnatage of the lighter evenings. I look forward to seeing as many members as possible who can make it.

March’s midweek Ride Wednesday 8th March

From Ripley car park we rode north through Ripon and took back roads to the cafe at Thorp Perrow Arboretum for our coffee stop. A very pleasant coffee stop, where we were made most welcome.

Then on through Beale to take a circular route towards Richmond and on country lanes west to the A66 stopping for lunch at the Cross Lanes Organic Cafe just south of Barnard Castle. The Pizza Oven was fired up and one of the group sampled its delights. Some of the rest of us were left wishing that we’d ordered a Pizza as well.

A thoroughly enjoyable route, taking us on some delightful toads that I not visited previously.

The roads were dry and dusty and the bikes were soon picking up a covering.

The return home down through Arkengarthdale, Leyburn and back towards Ripley, although we elected for an impromptu stop at Brymor Ice Cream parlor. Again the route explored new roads for me, past Leighton Reservoir although I have visited How Stean Gorge area previously.

Thank you John Blanchfield, for planning a hugely successful day.
You even booked fantastic weather and dry roads which were for the most part clear.

The bike did need an extensive Jet Wash however!

Forward Notification of HAB Monday Evening Meetings

Dear Members,

The Committee recently sought anecdotal opinion from members as to whether they would prefer for the monthly Monday-evening indoor meetings to continue throughout the summer months in preference to evening Ride-Outs. This was due to the very small number of participants recently attending Monday evening Ride-Outs.

In the absence of any conclusive preference either way, the Committee has decided to run a Programme for Summer meetings with a published indoor meeting on those occasions when a Speaker can be arranged, and to further continue with a Ride-Out on other occasions.

To this end, the following Speakers have been arranged:-

April 10thSteven Hoult will be talking about his ‘Biking Experiences and the Masters.’

July 17th – Sarah Sillars is the CEO of IAM RoadSmart, and she’s coming to talk to the club about ‘Bringing meaningful change to the organisation’.  It should be noted that this is a change from the normal date, however it has been indicated in the published programme.

Ride Out Report, Wednesday 8th February

Ride Out, Wednesday 8th February

A fabulous mid-week ride out on Wednesday, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated.

There were just 5 riders, which meant that for much of the time we could make good progress and only needed to deploy the ‘drop-off’ system periodically.

The weather forecast was spot-on, cold and dry with some sunshine. The snow on the top of Ingleborough with the sun on the side of the mountain was quite spectacular. The grip heaters were on full heat setting though, and we were all well ‘layered-up’.

The route out from the 59 Café took us south then west through Farnhill, Thornton in Craven, Bolton by Bowland and on to Slaidburn for a coffee stop at the Riverbank Tearoom.

From Slaidburn, heading north to High Bentham then towards Ingleton and on to Hawes for lunch at the Wensleydale Pantry.

The route was varied, interesting and quite new to me in some parts, and I was very ready for my lunch in Hawes.

After lunch we headed back towards Leyburn, turning right after Aysgarth, on down through Wharfedale and back past Bolton Abbey.

Thank you David Haywood for a well organised ride out, altogether a great day with splendid company.
