Changes In Traffic Policing Submitted By Pauline Simms (From IAM Website)

Biggest change in traffic policing for decades begins 16 August 2013.
Fixed penalty notices for careless driving offences such as middle lane hogging come into effect today (Friday 16 August 2013), according to road safety charity IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists).

Following a government consultation announced in June, the £100 fine will be introduced for a wide range of careless driving offences including tailgating and middle lane hogging.
The IAM advise that in car distractions that causes you to swerve or drive badly could lead to prosecution, you don’t have to inconvenience other road users to be issued with a ticket.  Some typical examples of careless driving are:

  • overtaking on the inside;
  • driving inappropriately close to another vehicle;
  • inadvertently driving through a red light;
  • emerging from a side road into the path of another vehicle;
  • tuning a car radio; when the driver was avoidably distracted by this action;
  • selecting and lighting a cigarette or similar when the driver was avoidably distracted by that use.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “If the police target the worst and most persistent offenders this could be good news for road safety.  If, however, it just becomes another numbers game with thousands of careless driving tickets issued then the impact will be limited.  The IAM believes that driver retraining courses have a much bigger potential to actually improve poor driving than simply issuing a standard fine and should always be offered as the first stage of prosecution.”

See previous post for details.

A group of seven  HAB members have indicated they would like to attend the First on Scene First Aid course in Rhyl with a preferred date of November 10th 2013.

Some are going for the day and others are interested in spending a couple of nights in Wales and having a ride out on the Saturday.

This is the last call for anyone interested in attending.
Please le me know by Thursday 8th August as I will be finalising numbers with the training team and looking at accommodation for those who want to stay over.

Tan hill

s you are aware, HAB have an opportunity to join a ride out with Suffolk Advanced Bikes this weekend, as they are based at Tan Hill Friday and Saturday nights. I understand that 15 SAM members are attending. So, if you fancy a ride out, the plan is

1) For the Saturday, there is likely to be a variety of rides from Tan Hill (one towards the Lakes, one towards Ilkley and one local to TH). If you are interested, just be at Tan Hill Inn in time for rides to depart at 10am (suggest be there for 9 to 9.30 for introductions etc)
2) For those that cannot make Saturday (or even if you can), I understand that SAM will be departing Tan Hill about 10am on Sunday for a ride out to Sutton Bank, before heading home. They re happy for any HAB members to join them on this ride as well.

A great opportunity to ride and socialise with another IAM club. You never know, they my even reciprocate if we have a ride into East Anglia in the future.
