Just a reminder that the 2-day mid-week trip to the Lakes next week replaces the normal Wednesday ride out for June. Mid-week Ride Outs will start again from the first Weds in July.
Roy Beniston is leading this weekend’s ride out to Knott End-on-Sea. A fantastic and well planned route through the Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland. Coffee stop at the Slaidburn cafe on the way with lunch at the splendid cafe at Knott End FY6 0EA.
Return journey is essentially a more southerly route finishing at Ripley for a customary and well deserved ice cream.
Mileage is 78 out, 76 return, fuel stop at half way. Please arrive at the ASDA lorry park with a full fuel tank at 9.00am for a 9.30am prompt start. Anyone wanting to join on-route please get in touch barrya.ring@gmail.com.
The weather is set to continue good, a little cooler towards the weekend, but very little chance of rain. Come along if you can this Sunday, see some lovely countryside, practice your advanced and group riding skills and an opportunity to socialise with fellow HAB members.
Just in case you were beginning to wonder, our Monday meeting ride outs start tomorrow evening. An hour or so ride to the Guiseley Wetherby Whaler. Sadly, my carefully planned ride is having to be adjusted as the A59 is being closed at Blubberhouses from tomorrow for a few days.
I did an appropriate time recce this evening and the low sun was an issue. The weather will be a little cloudier tomorrow evening but bring some sun glasses if you don’t have a drop down sun visor.
Meeting at the ASDA lorry park 7.00pm for 7.30pm start . Less than a 38 mile run to the Wetherby Whaler especially now the route is changed.
Hopefully you can make it, shame to miss the nice weather!
Just got around to downloading a copy of the above. It is a free resource for information and routes to travel our country from top to bottom or any which way you choose. It’s a PDF document which I could email to you, but you can download a copy for yourselves by visiting www.bit.ly/TomTomguide. There are gpx.files available for each route too. TomTom request your email address before you can download it but a small price to pay for such a useful guide, plus there is an offer for 20% off a Rider 550 if it still applies.
Any difficulty doing the download get it touch and I will send you a copy. barrya.ring@gmail.com
The monthly mid-week ride on Wednesday 1st May will be lead by John Blanchfield.
Meet at RIPLEY CAR PARK 9.00 – 9.30am start. From Ripley we head past Brimham Rocks to Wath and up alongside Gouthwaite Reservoir to the How Stean George cafe for a coffee stop.
Cosy!
Then we head northeast over the moors to pick up the A6108 near Jervaulx Abbey and on to Leyburn, Reeth and up Arkengarthdale, turning right to join the A66 near Barnard Castle. A short ride east takes us through the villages to Staindrop for lunch at The Country Tea Shop.
Plenty of parking!
We return south on the B6274 to Richmond, Bolton on Swale and Yafforth. Then we take the A167 to Topcliffe, through the villages to Boroughbridge where the ride finishes at Morrisions car park. Total mileage is 115.
All HAB members are invited to the above event at Tockwith Airfield this Sunday.
Where and When A Slow Maneuvering Workshop will be held on Sunday 28 April 2019 from 9.30 to 12.00 at Tockwith Airfield accommodated by 3D Motorcycle Training School. The airfield can be found by taking the B1224 out of Wetherby and taking the left turn at the crossroads after Bickerton. The entrance is on the right about ½ mile down the road.
Don’t blink, you’ll miss it!
On arrival wait at the 3D Cabin until you are collected.Under NO circumstances should you cross the training area. You will be collected by one of our Observers and cross as a group. Please by patient, THIS IS IMPORTANT!
Who Should Attend Everyone! All members of HAB including existing members who have passed their test and particularly associates under training. All riders need to exercise these little used and often avoided skills. There is room for friends or relatives of members who are interested but please inform Bob Hill in advance. We expect several Observers will attend to assist with the training and they should meet at the 3D Cabin at 9am.
What will we do? We start with a short introduction about slow riding with some hints and tips to keep you upright in this aspect of riding or moving your bike. We will then split up into small groups under an Observer who will take you round the various set exercises. Once you have refreshed your slow riding then you will be free to practice on the exercises laid out. Finally we will hold a short voluntary competition around an interesting layout. Some of you may also wish to go on an impromptu ride following the workshop.
Facilities 3D have kindly agreed to allow us to use their toilet facilities and have tea and coffee making facilities available. The nearby Carting Track may also be open and if so their Café will be available. The weather forecast is up to 15 deg. light cloud and a gentle breeze. So be prepared! Pack the rain suit?
Questions If you have any questions about the event or want to receive training on a specific part of riding please contact me.
See you all there,
Best Regards, Bob Hill Chief Observer Harrogate Advanced Bikes
The start will be as normal at ASDA 9.00 for 9.30 start with the full tank you will need to complete a 160 mile ride (opportunities to fill up available for bikes with a shorter range).
The ride, led by Bob Hill, will be interesting, covering several different types of road as it snakes it’s way through to Middleton-in-Teesdale. Setting off north we will ride through Bedale and Richmond for a comfort and refreshment stop at Piercebridge. For those interested in history, Piercebridge was the site of a Roman bridge, located as we enter the village from the south. Go straight on at the first right angle bend!
From Piercebridge we will make our way to Stanhope in Weardale after enjoying the windy route across Hamsterley Common. Travelling west we go back over the moors past Weardale Ski Club with England’s longest ski slope!
Can you spot it?
We join the Alston road past High Force into Middleton In Teesdale for a lunch stop in one of the many cafes (90Miles).
Our return is via Bough, Tan Hill, Reeth and Leyburn before taking the back roads through to Ripley for a well-earned ice cream amongst the Easter Holiday crowds. Please note that this route may change depending on the recce ride next week. Final route will be given at the briefing on Sunday. Tail End will be covered by Barry Ring.
The weather forecast is looking good so I hope you can all tear yourselves away from the Easter Eggs etc. to enjoy a great ride.
We were planning a short ride out this coming Monday but have managed to arrange a speaker from Biker Down North Yorkshire instead.
A few of us have attended the Biker Down first aid/road safety course recently and and I’m very pleased to say their team leader Fiona Ancell has agreed to do a short presentation to our group at the Bilton Cricket Club.
The meeting will be at the usual time 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. The Biker Down presentation will start straight after any club news and an introduction from Peter Smith (standing in for John who is unable to attend).
Further Information on Biker Down can be found with these links:
Fiona is doing this in her own time, and if you are a member of HAB you must be interested in road safety, so please do come along to this meeting if you can.
Bolton Cricket Club’s splendid food will be served at the usual time.
Looking forward to seeing as many as possible on Monday night.
Lots of our colleagues have come forward in 2018 and this year so far to lead our Sunday Ride Outs, some of them for the first time. Thank you very much to them for doing that.
Our Sunday April 21st Ride Out is still in dire need of a leader. Have a think about coming forward with your favourite day ride especially if you have not led a ride before. Full support can be given. Advice about routes, planning suitable stops, safety rules and guidance on turn marking.
There is also several opportunities to lead one of our summer Monday evening rides starting May 13th if you want to ease yourself in gently.
Don’t be shy! Please get in touch if you would like to give it a go.
