Apologies for not getting a crack on with the evening rides so let’s do a Wednesday for a change.

The plan is a regular favourite-fish & chips at The Wetherby Whaler in Guiseley LS20 8LZ. But enough about the food, the ride is starting at Dragon Road in Harrogate at the lorry park next to ASDA HG1 5DB. Gather from 6.30pm for a 7.00pm set off. A quick whizz almost to Bolton Bridge but a turn off for Beamsley for a ride over the hills to Ilkley and onto Guiseley. If you live to the West side of Bolton Bridge join us at the Beamsley turn off or even do your own route or just join us for F & Cs in Guiseley.

Wednesday’s weather is looking good and as numbers are effectively unlimited as we can eat outside (up to 30), and as this is a social ride with no training element, full HAB members, associates and prospective associates are invited to come along.

Traffic laws must always be obeyed when riding on the road. Do not worry if you fall behind, there will be a marker rider waiting to show you any turning during the route. Ride your normal ride within your capabilities and stay safe. Please note each rider is responsible for their own safety, actions, and any consequences that those actions may have.

I’m really quite new to biking – after wanting a motorcycle licence ever since I can remember I managed to overcome years of parental ‘don’t do it’ (my mum’s an orthopaedic nurse so understandably has a rather one-sided view of it) and got my licence Nov 2019.  I didn’t actually manage to get a motorcycle until July 2020 (combination of wanting to move house to one with a garage and various lockdowns etc).  This picture was the day I brought her home and I think you can tell my sheer joy of finally owning one!  Since then I’ve been motorcycling as much as possible and want to learn as much as I can and just get my experience up really.

This Months ride will be a scenic route through the Yorkshire Dales to Tan Hill and then back through North Yorkshire and will be about 135 miles.

The ride will start at 9.30 am from the Dragon Road Lorry Park in Harrogate (Arrive 9.15 am). From there we head towards Pateley Bridge for a breakfast stop at the Old School Tearoom Café at Hebden (null (theoldschooltearoom.com)).

From there we head through Grassington and over the top of Malham to Langcliffe and then through Horton in Ribblesdale towards Hawes. We continue through Buttertubs Pass to Tan Hill. We bypass the Tan Hill Pub (expensive and restricted menu) and after a short distance stop at the Charles Bathurst Inn for Lunch (Welcome to The CB Inn | Homepage).

After lunch we head towards Richmond with a detour over the tank ranges to come back through Layburn (Fuel stop at 108 miles, there are public toilets in Leyburn if anyone wants a comfort break whilst others fuel up.), Masham, Ripon and back to Ripley castle for an ice cream.

Current guidelines are that 30 can meet outdoors and 6 from any household indoors. Both locations have outdoor seating and are happy to host people indoors as long as we keep to the rule of 6.

Good Evening everyone.

I hope everyone is staying safe and enjoying the better weather.

The AGM was held via Zoom on the 10th May and we enclose the minutes for the members perusal. There were a few changes in post at the AGM. John Blanchfield stepped down as Chairman after his three year tenure and Paul Dresser was voted in to succeed John. I would like to thank John for steering the ship through these difficult times with Covid. Also, Peter McNulty took up the position of Secretary.

As restrictions start to be lifted, and we hope the Indian variant don’t scupper these plans we are now looking to re-start our normal activities. We have been in discussions with Bilton Cricket club to start our indoor meetings from September. We have already secured some speakers for these meetings including Graham Feest (Road Safety Consultant) on the 13th September, Mike Bevington of Yorkshire Air Ambulance for the 4th October (Please note this is a week earlier than the normal second Monday due to lack of availability at Bilton) and Nick Jefferies, TT racer and local motorcycle dealership family on November the 8th.

The next Sunday ride coming up is the 20th June. I will be leading the ride with Peter Smith as tail ender. I did intend a route into the Peak District but am now planning a ride into the Dales, Tan Hill, and back down through North Yorkshire. There will be no limit to ride participants but we will have to consider numbers for the food stops so will still be asking people to book on the ride rather than just turning up on the day. Further details will be published.

We are also considering other activities such as the slow riding workshop and some other social activities or functions. If any members have any suggestions as to what they would like to do in the club then please let me know.

We have had a good influx of new associates and Bob has been busy working with his team of Observers to allocate these and start training. We would love to welcome these new associates to ride outs and our meetings.

For this ride next Wednesday meeting at Morrison’s car park, Boroughbridge YO51 9UR from 9.15 am departing at 9.30. Fuel available at the re-designed and refurbished petrol station.

From Boroughbridge we’ll head north east through topcliffe and Carlton Minot before arriving in Thirsk Market Place for a coffee stop (YO7 1HQ).

From Thirsk, heading out on the A170, before taking the first left towards Felixkirk and Hawnby then dropping down onto the B1257 for a few miles of nice, fast twists. At the top of Clay Bank we’ll make a right turn towards Ingleby Greenhow and on into the North Yorks National Park and Castleton. From Castletown the route heads south through the moors and on to Rosedale Abbey for lunch (YO18 8RA general postcode whichever café is open).

From Rosedale we continue south to Hutton-le-Hole then north again into a remote part of the moors to do the Bransdale loop before dropping down to the outskirts of Helmsley. Now south through Harome, Nunnington and Hovingham before turning west on back roads, through Coxwold, Hutton Sessay and Cundall to Thornton Bridge and eventually back to Boroughbridge.

Ride length: approx 123 miles.

Numbers are flexible as we are now allowed up to 30 riders. Please let David know you are coming along though so we can keep (paperless) records as per IAM recommendations.

The plan is to have a coffee stop in Easingwold and a lunch stop in Yarm.  Alternatively, feel free to bring your own refreshments.

Unfortunately we’re a day too early to enjoy possible easing of the current Covid restrictions so we are still limited to 6 people on the 16th but we should be clear to increase that number on the 30th.

The plan is to have a coffee stop in Easingwold and a lunch stop in Yarm.  Because of the limitations I’m not booking anywhere in particular but we should have no problem in finding cafes for takeaways.  Alternatively, feel free to bring your own food & drink.

There is a motorcycle Skills Day run by the IAM at Croft Circuit near Dalton-on-Tees just off the A1 taking place on Wednesday 30th June. I had a great time when I did this day in 2019 as did a few other members from HAB. I’m booked on it again and would encourage HAB members to give it a go. It’s not an all-out track day but allows riders, with the guidance of the IAM instructors, to explore the potential of their vehicle and to improve their riding. Before and between each track session there is bitesize instruction and a debrief to assist riders to improve their skills.

When I booked my place last week there were plenty of spaces available. The cost is £149 and after experiencing the day in 2019, despite the damp weather, I would say it was excellent value for money. I did take out additional track insurance for the day as my policy did not cover it. Please check your own policy. You may be covered (Cornmarket?), or you might be with an additional premium.

The day is not limited to HAB members so if you have a biking mate not currently an IAM member this may be an excellent way to get them involved.
