Sorry folks, anyone planning to come on tomorrow’s ride-it’s off.
Some riders have pulled out already and I’ve been on another recce today too. It was -4 with hard frost on the side roads, iced-up slush in places and I was tiptoeing around, as if avoiding pot holes was bad enough. Haworth had snow a couple of days ago and it’s still on the ground. The forecast is -2 again tomorrow. Apologies to anyone hard-core enough to give it a go. The main roads are clear, but I’m convinced it’s not safe conditions for the ride so I’m putting it off again.
It’s a lot to ask in January but roll-on some warm clear weather!
OnSunday January 22nd we are meeting at Dragon Road Lorry Park HG1 5DB for ourfirst Sunday Club Ride of 2022. Please arrive from 9.00am for chat and pre-ride briefing before a 9.30am set off.

Mileage is about 96 miles. A GPX file is available.
Barry Ring is your ride leader with Roy Beniston as TEC (if his bike is fixed). Paul Dresser is on standby.
The AGM! Just kidding-it’s Trevor Cooper’s 2023 Scotland Trip!
Trevor is back by popular request to lead us to Scotland again this year. A three day trip commencing on Friday 12th May, returning home on Sunday 14th.
Stopping over for two nights at the The Sure Hotel, Lockerbie. A massive success in 2022 has gone to Trevor’s head and he is keen to repeat the feat. For an idea of last year’s trip check out the January 2022 post on the HAB website. Here is a link to it:
Full details for the 2023 trip including cost will follow, but get the ball rolling and contact Trevor directly on 07 525 130 234 to book a space(£20 deposit payable to Trevor please).
You will have seen in the last HAB post news about the change of date for the Mid-Week ride this month and that goes ahead this Wednesday the 11th as planned (please see the previous post for details).
Normally this coming week-end would be the correct one for our Sunday Ride-Out. However, that too has been moved and will now take place on Sunday 22nd January instead. Apologies for any inconvenience and of course a post will go out with details soon.
Next month should be back to normal with the dates set out on the 2023 Event Calendar on the HAB website. Please have a look at the ride dates in the calendar. Ride leaders are needed for all months both for Sundays and Wednesdays so don’t be shy, please come forward and support your club with your ideas for a favourite route. If you are going to be new to leading a ride and if you require any support, just ask.Use this link for more details.
Note slight change from normal: Meet at Ripley Castle Tearoom HG3 3AY from 9.45am for a coffee and natter before we get on our way.
A nice simple and relatively short route suitable for this time of year!
From Ripley we head out on the B6165 towards Pateley Bridge, turning left at Summerbridge towards Dacre and on towards the B6265 at Greenhow. Now on and through Grassington before turning right to head up Wharfedale towards Aysgarth, turning left on the Hawes road. At Bainbridge turn right and on to Askrigg.
Lunch stop: The Crown Inn, Main Street, Askrigg DL83HQ.
After lunch we head back on the north side of the River Ure passing Castle Bolton then Redmire and on to Leyburn. Through Leyburn, keeping on the A684 towards Bedale but turning right on minor roads towards Ulshaw to pick up the A6108 at the Coverbridge Inn. Continue on to Masham. Through Masham, now on minor roads, to Grewelthorpe, Kirkby Malzeard and Grantley and returning back to Ripley.
I had planned a ride out this weekend to Hollingworth Lake at Littleborough near Rochdale, for lunch at the Wine Press and stopping at Haworth on the way. After doing a recce with Roy Beniston a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been watching the long range weather forecast since. A few days ago it was showing 70% chance of sleet and near freezing temperatures on Sunday 18th. Now it is showing 90% chance of rain but temperatures a little higher. Even if we chose another route the weather is going to be the same and I don’t believe we should ride out in these conditions, so sadly and sorry but I am cancelling the ride.
The first Sunday ride of 2023 hopefully (weather permitting) will provide an opportunity to try again.
Thank you for all your support in 2022, Ride Leaders, TEC’s and those that joined the rides. I hope you got as much out of it as I did.
We are now up to 26 attendees for our get together and probably close to our comfortable maximum number.
Could I gently nudge anyone who hasn’t yet sent me their £10pp deposit to do so, so that we can confirm final numbers to the restaurant as soon as possible.
Our December meeting is on the 19th of December (normal time and place) this year instead of this Monday the 12th, which would have been our normal 2nd Monday.
Doug Masterton and I will be hosting a Christmas biking quiz with some prizes. We will be looking to make this a team event with 3-5 teams of 4 members each depending on numbers. We have asked Bilton to add some Christmas treats to the Buffet.
Looking forward to the new year we have secured speakers taking us up to Spring and as follows.
Monday 9th Jan – John Gregory – Local IAM car and bike enthusiast
Monday 13th Feb – Alan Beadle – History of speedway racing in Yorkshire
Monday 13th March – Tony, Michelin Tyres, Current products, and tyre technology.
Monday 10th April MAG – Colin Brown, Current activities of Motorcycle Action Group and future of motorcycling in UK
